The Geranium plant is indigenous to South Africa and was introduced into Europe in the 17th century. There are over 250 natural species of Pelargonium which does sometimes lead to confusion regarding the different varieties. The Bourbon variety, produced by Ayanda African Oils, is yielded from the Cultivar Rose and is commonly known as the Pelargonium Graveolens. This is a perennial, shrubby plant which has aromatic leaves. These leaves are steam distilled to produce Rose Geranium Var. Bourbon Essential Oil.

Rose Geranium Var. Bourbon Oil Characteristics

Rose Geranium Var. Bourbon Essential Oil is greenish in colour with a pronounced leafy and rosy scent that is often described as being floral and uplifting. In addition to the strong rose aroma, Rose Geranium Var. Bourbon Oil is also known to hold subtle notes of green herbs, citrus, and spice.

The strong rose scent offered by Rose Geranium Var. Bourbon Essential Oil means it is widely used as a fragrant component in cosmetic products. The Rosemary Verbenone variety initially originated from the Corsica Island in the Mediterranean. Rosemary Var. Verbenone Oil and Rosemary Var. Verbenone Essential Oil are skilfully extracted from the flowering tops, leaves, and twigs of the locally grown Rosemary plant, through steam distillation. Rosemary is a small evergreen shrub with thick aromatic linear leaves which grow up to 1.5 meters in height.

There are three principal chemotypes of Rosemarinus Officinalus:

• Camphor – borneol
• 1,8 Cineole
• Verbenone

Ayanda African Oils produces the Verbenone variety in bulk. The percentage of Verbenone in our Rosemary Var. Verbenone Oil is typically over 10 percent.

Rosemary Var. Verbenone Essential Oil is a pale yellow to almost colourless Oil with a strong, fresh, woody herbaceous, and balsamic aroma. The Verbenone variety is considered the gentlest of the Rosemary chemotypes and is known to be less stimulating than Rosemary Cineole.

Lemon Tea Tree Oil is extracted via steam distillation from the same plant family as common Tea Tree Oil. However, this uniquely lemon scented version of the oil is obtained from the fragrant leaves of the Leptospermum Petersonni plant, as opposed to the Melaleuca Alternifolia plant. Leptospermum Petersonni is native to Australia, New Zealand, and Southeast Asia. Its leaves are a different shape and colour to the regular Tea Tree plant, and it grows to a similar size tree as tea tree plants.

Tea Tree Essential Oil is steam-distilled from the leaves and terminal twigs of the Tea Tree tree, also known as the Melaleuca Alternifolia plant. As part of the steam distillation process, steam is passed through the tea tree plant material, effectively volatising the volatile compounds, and allowing them to be condensed and collected.

Tea Tree and Tea Tree Oil Characteristics

The tea tree plant grows up to five to seven meters in height and can be harvested annually. The Melaleuca Alternifolia plant characteristically features papery bark and multiple layers of a linear leaf. The tea tree’s leaves are usually bright green in colour, and it blossoms with bottle-brush type white flowers in spring.

Tea Tree Essential Oil ranges from a pale-yellowish or green colour, to almost clear. This Oil is well-known for its medicinal aroma, which is often described as being warm, spicy, woody, herbaceous, and earthy.

Ayanda African Oils is a co-operative that represents several Essential Oil Farmers on the East Coast of South Africa. By knowing the exact source of our oils, we can be confident that they are 100% pure, certified organic and unadulterated. We manage and control the full process, from seedlings to growing the crops to harvesting to the distillation of the oil, on our many farms across the East Coast of South Africa. We are able to offer our clients a reliable supply of consistent and high quality oil and hydrosols from our modern distillation facilities.

DISTILLERIES

Ayanda’s distilleries use steam distillation to extract aromatic compounds (essential oil) from a plant. During the steam distillation process, steam passes through the plant material. The essential oil rises to the top and is separated from the hydrosol (floral water) and collected. Should hydrosol be required, it too is collected and packaged separately.

Ayanda African Oils operates 6 distilleries with over 700 hectares of crop cultivated to essential oils and we are growing this area every year.

Our state of the art distillation facilities are constructed from food grade stainless steel. This helps prevent contamination and ensures the volatile organic essential oils maintain their therapeutic qualities by not reacting with the distillation equipment itself.

Distilleries:

  1. Mtonjaneni Distillery, has two x 1 ton distillation Vats
  2. Vorster Distillery, has two x 2 ton Distillation Vats
  3. Windermere Distillery, has two x 1 ton, and two x half ton distillation Vats.
  4. Doringkop (Ukushona) Distillery has four x 1 ton Distillation Vats
  5. Sunshine Seedlings has four x 2 ton distillation Vats
  6. Wezco Distillery has two x 1 ton distillation Vats

Processing Operations:

  • We adhere to strict manufacturing standards
  • We have various quality management systems in place to ensure quality control and consistency in the standard of our product
  • Our standard operating procedures are in line with International management and quality standards

Our oil is supplied in either 25L, 210L or 1000L fluorinated HDPE UN approved containers, all our containers are food grade certified.

Despite our rural location we are strategically located within one hour from a sea port, as well King Shaka International airport (Durban), facilitating fast and efficient trade. All our products can be exported in bulk from our farm warehouse in South Africa, to anywhere in the world.

Ayanda African Oils was developed from a need to expand and consolidate the essential oil industry in South Africa. A farmers co-operative was formed to assist farmers with marketing capabilities and offer shared, state of the art resources. Through this co-operative, Ayanda African Oils was born.

Our shareholders grow, process and market a range of certified organic and conventional essential oils and hydrosols, for the aromatherapy and cosmetic industry.

Ayanda African Oils represents several Essential Oil Farmers on the East Coast of South Africa, some of whom have been involved in the growing and distillation of essential oils since 2001.

Controlling the full process, from growing the crops to the distillation of the oil, on our many geographically separate farms, we are able to offer our clients reliable supply of consistent quality oil and hydrosols from our modern distillation facilities.
